Commands.
Brigade, June 25, 1861, composed of First, Second, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Arkansas Regiments of Infantry, District of Arkansas. Commanding Fort Morgan, Mobile Bay, March 18, 1861. Commanding division under General A. S. Johnston, in Kentucky and Tennessee, 1861-62. Commanding Third Corps, Army of the Mississippi, composed of Hindman's, Wood's and Cleburne's Divisions, 6th and 7th April, 1862, at Shiloh. June to August, 1862, commanding the Army of the Mississippi, afterward called the Army of Tennessee. August to October 10, 1862, commanding left wing of General Bragg's army in the Kentucky campaign, composed of Buckner's and Patton Anderson's Divisions and Wheeler's Cavalry. Commanding, December 31, 1862, at Murfreesborough, Tennessee, corps consisting of Breckinridge's and Cleburne's Divisions ; also in command (at this battle) of McCown's Division. Commanding, at Missionary Ridge, November 25, 1863, the right wing of the army consisting of Cheatham's, Stevenson's, Walker's and Cleburne's Divisions. Commanding, in December, 1863, the Army of Tennessee. Commanding, May to September, 1864, in the Dalton-Atlanta campaign, a corps composed of Cheatham's, Cleburne's, Walker's and Bate's Divisions. September 28, 1864, commanding the Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Commanding troops of his department, and some troops of the Army of Tennessee, at Bentonville, in March, 1865. Died at Wytheville, Va., November 6, 1873.

Hardee, William Joseph, born in Georgia, appointed from Georgia cadet United States Military Academy, July 1, 1834; graduated twenty- sixth in a class of forty-five.
Second lieutenant, Second Dragoons, July 1, 1838.
First lieutenant, December 3, 1839.
Captain, September 13, 1844.
Major, Second Cavalry, March 3, 1855.
Lieutenant colonel, First Cavalry, June 28, 1860.
Brevet major, March 25, 1847, for gallant and meritorious conduct in the battle at Medellin, near Vera Cruz, Mexico, and
Lieutenant colonel, August 20, 1847, for gallant and meritorious conduct in the fight at St. Augustine, Mexico.
Resigned January 31, 1860.
